Here’s How You Handle Unmet Expectations, Based on Your Personality Type

Unmet expectations are a big part of life, but some people react to them differently than others. Here is how well you handle unmet expectations, based on your personality type.


INFJs can sometimes be idealists, which might make it difficult for them to handle disappointment. INFJs might have certain expectations about how things should be, and can become a bit upset if they are let down. This doesn’t mean the INFJ won’t find a way to overcome these feelings, since they are often used to a certain level of disappointment. They will find a way to deal with their feelings, but over time it might cause the INFJ to seek a change in their life in order to avoid these constant unmet expectations.


ENFJs often have high expectations for themselves and even those around them. This can cause the ENFJ to struggle when they encounter unmet expectations. They might want to find a way to fix things and force a change that helps their situation become more pleasing. ENFJs can sometimes seek to guide or control a situation, in order to make sure that everyone around them is happy. They want to live up to the expectations of others, but they also want this in return. ENFJs become frustrated when things don’t go as expected, but they will certainly try to find a way to overcome it.

ENFPs can definitely be idealistic people, which can lead to them struggling with unmet expectations. They often want things a certain way and might push to make that happen. ENFPs can be stubborn people, who dislike feeling disappointment with things that truly matter to them. They will often find ways to have these needs and expectations met, and won’t stop until things work out. ENFPs understand that certain things won’t always go their way, and they can handle it with most situations. They have priorities and will only fight for the things that truly matter to them.


INTJs work hard to plan situations accordingly and prepare for most possible outcomes. INTJs don’t particularly enjoy unmet expectations but they will often attempt to find a way to improve the situation. INTJs can be somewhat stubborn and will work hard to make things happen, especially when it is important to them. INTJs won’t simply accept that things haven’t worked out, and will strategize in order to solve the problem or find some sort of compromise that makes sense.


ENTJs often prepare for negative outcomes, but attempt to strategize so that they can overcome it. ENTJs can be a bit obsessed with maintain a sense of control, and believe it is important to always be efficient and make things happen. ENTJs don’t enjoy when their expectations are not met, but they rarely expect things from others. They realize that most people cannot live up to what they need and expect, so the ENTJ often tries to do most things themselves.


INTPs often realize that their expectations can’t always be met, especially when they expect things from others. They often hold themselves to high standards, but they can cope with having others fail to meet their expectations. The INTP will simply move on from someone when they feel like they aren’t capable of properly meeting their expectations, especially in a romantic relationship. They don’t hope to change people, and definitely don’t want others to attempt to change them.


ENTPs realize that life isn’t about always having your needs or expectations met, which is why they rarely rely on others for things. ENTPs can often take things as they come, and will find a way to roll with the punches. They enjoy being able to explore new things in life, and will push themselves to overcome challenges. ENTPs see everything as a learning opportunity, and utilize experiences as a way to grow and understand themselves better.


ISTJs definitely try hard to avoid having their expectations unmet, but they often take matters into their own hands. They rarely expect other people to live up to their needs, and have a strong sense of independence. ISTJs can become frustrated when they expect something to go a certain way, but they simply take on the challenge and try to improve. For ISTJs it is important to always move forward and continue tempering their expectations so that they don’t become knocked down.


ESTJs are stubborn people but they realize that their expectations cannot always be met. They work hard to accomplish their goals and take a sense of personal responsibility for their lives. ESTJs will simply overcome a challenge and work to find a way to improve the situation in the future. ESTJs realize that things won’t always go their way at first, but will try and make sure that they can prepare better the next time.


ISFJs don’t enjoy having unmet expectations and can become rather upset by this. If their loved ones fail to be there for them the way they need it can leave the ISFJ feeling drained and unappreciated. They need to feel something in return since they work so hard to tend to the needs of others. ISFJs will take this for a while and try to find a way to overcome their own feelings of disappointment. ISFJs do like having things a certain way, and prefer to follow a certain schedule in order to maintain a sense of harmony in their environment.


ESFJs can become rather disappointment when their expectations are not met, since they often leave the bar rather low. When things don’t work out how they expect it can throw the ESFJ off, and cause them to feel rather frustrated. They try to keep a certain balance in their environment, and don’t often expect much from those around them. ESFJs simply want to feel appreciated, without having to force this onto others.


ISTPs often understand that life is filled with unmet expectations and try not to let this cause them too much disappointment. ISTPs often try to go with the flow and let life come at them. They aren’t afraid of taking risks and enjoy experiencing new things in life. When things don’t go their way the ISTP will simply find another path to take, and will try not to stress too much about it.


While ESTPs try to live in the present moment they can become frustrated if their expectations are not met. They are complex people who can be difficult to predict at times. They often want to control things in their lives and can be stubborn about getting what they want out of life. If their expectations are not met the ESTP will simply try and find a way to overcome this challenge and make things happen.


ISFPs definitely try to go with the flow and don’t want to let things cause them too much stress. ISFPs realize that life cannot always go their way, and will try and roll with the punches. They can become disappointed when their romantic interests do not meet their expectations though. They can be idealistic when it comes to relationships and want to find someone who completes them in many ways.


ESFPs often try to go with the flow and will want to overcome any feelings of disappointment. When the ESFPs expectations are not met they might want to move on from this, but it can be rather difficult for them. When the ESFP truly wants something they will do whatever it takes to make it happen, even if that means enlisting the help of their loved ones. Having their expectations go unmet can leave the ESFP feeling frustrated and unhappy.
