INTP Self-Awareness: The INTP Journey to Self-Discovery

Self-awareness is not always an easy thing to obtain, for some it seems harder than for others. Self-awareness means digging deep into your own emotions and inner thoughts, and searching to understand what is going on underneath the outer appearance. Sometimes this leads to painful memories, and recognizing certain flaws which we don’t always want to accept. Self-discovery can be a challenging journey, sometimes it is painful and other times it is very rewarding. Ultimately the struggles we endure trying to understand and accept our positive and negative traits, can be an amazing way to grow and become the best version of ourselves possible. The more people lack self-awareness, the easier it is to hurt those around us without meaning to, which is why it is so important.

INTPs care about growth and being able to constantly improve and discover new things. They are often good at analyzing situations and people, in hopes of understanding them better. For the INTP self-awareness is something they value and strive for, but like anyone the journey is not always a simple one. The struggle for the INTP is not with facts and things they can learn about with their minds, instead it is more with understanding and focusing on their own emotions. INTPs certainly have a good deal of self-awareness in a lot of areas, but might struggle to accept certain things and find ways of trying to avoid those pieces of themselves in hopes of finding something more factual or logical to grasp onto.

INTP Introspection

Being that INTPs are introspective people, this can be a helpful tool towards understanding themselves better. They don’t want to look at themselves inaccurately, and so they often spend a lot of time analyzing their own thoughts and behaviors. INTPs also try not to be bias about themselves, wanting to uncover the flaws as well as the positive attributes. For the INTP it is about being precise and not allowing things to cloud their personal judgement. They can spend hours inside of their own inner minds, just mulling over different ideas and pieces of information. They can do this when it comes to analyzing themselves as well, searching for ways to comprehend their own motivations and desires. For the INTP, it is important to take the time to try and be more self-aware, so that they can understand their own goals and be able to grow from this understanding. As the INTP gets older they often want to be able to improve, disliking the idea of remaining the same or staying stagnant. They don’t want to be someone who is incapable of becoming better, and often see this as rather wasteful. They might not be as focused on this type of growth and self-awareness when they are very young, but certainly become drawn to it as they get older and more mature. INTPs do care about being self-aware and strive to see things with clarity, not wanting emotions to cloud their judgement or way of thinking. For the INTP this can be a challenging process at times, since they can actually be a bit too critical of certain parts of themselves. INTPs want to be open to analyzing even their flaws, but this can be hard when they feel so easily misunderstood by the people around them.

INTP Emotions

When it comes to emotions this is where the INTP might struggle on their self-awareness journey. While they might be amazing at analyzing things objectively and using their sense of intuition to reach a better understanding, when it comes to feelings they struggle. For the INTP, emotions are just a bit trickier, as they don’t always seem accurate or even factual. Feelings are not grounded in facts, and can sometimes be irrational and unreliable. This makes it hard for the INTP to focus on or trust in their own feelings, and so they might even neglect them entirely. They might spend time trying to process certain emotions, but this can quickly become exhausting for them. INTPs do want to understand themselves in every way they can, but when they reach the point of trying to grasp onto their feelings it can be a bit exhausting for them. This is something which often takes the INTP years to fully gain self-awareness of, and is not something they should rush into as it means focusing on functions which aren’t naturally strong for them. This does not mean it is impossible, many INTPs become much more comfortable with emotions as they mature and get to know themselves better. Like anyone it is a process, and self-awareness is something which comes in steps and little victories.

How to Improve

For the INTP to become more self-aware, they need to be more patient with themselves. They can become anxious about wanting to improve and learn, constantly hoping to skip a few steps ahead. This is a good thing in many ways, since INTPs are hungry for knowledge and wanting to improve. This can also be a struggle for them, as it causes the INTP to be too hard on themselves and can send them into a tailspin causing a serious lack of motivation. For the INTP patience is key for actually becoming more self-aware, as well as being willing to cut themselves some slack. Trusting in people who care for them can certainly be a useful tool for the INTP, but at times they struggle to find people they feel they can fully trust. INTPs rarely feel understood by those around them, but this can be a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy for them. Their lack of trust makes it hard for people to ever see beyond their walls, which makes it hard for the INTP to ever reach that understanding from others. For the INTP trusting in themselves and their intuition is a big part of becoming more at ease and of becoming more self-aware as well.
