The Enneagram 172 Tritype doesn’t actually exist. Enneagram Tritypes are typically created from a mixture of the Enneagram’s nine distinct personality types, ranging from Type 1 to Type 9.

The “Tritype” system was introduced by Katherine Chernick Fauvre, and is a theory that extends the main Enneagram personality theory, which posits that a person primarily identifies with one of the nine types, but also has some characteristics of two other types. This can lend complex and unique depth to an individual’s personality.

Theoretically, speaking, for a 172 tritype to exist, there would need to be an Enneagram type 12, which isn’t the case. The numbers in a tritype generally represent the dominant Enneagram type from each of the three centers of intelligence: instinctive (Types 8, 9, 1), feeling (Types 2, 3, 4), and thinking (Types 5, 6, 7).

For example, a 125 tritype includes Type 1 from the instinctive center, Type 2 from the feeling center, and Type 5 from the thinking center. Therefore, a “172” notation does not fall within the recognized Nine Enneagram types.

It’d be important to refer to accurate Enneagram types, for instance in the context of 172, the person might be trying to refer to a 1w2 and 2w1, or a mix of Type 1 and Type 2 in some fashion. However, it’s good to double-check and clarify what numerical combination someone is referring to.

Remember, understanding your dominant personality type and its added characteristics from your Tritype can shed light on your strengths and
weaknesses, and provide profound insight into your motivations and fears.
