HSP INFP: The Highly Sensitive INFP

Someone who is an HSP or highly sensitive person, experiences life in a much different way. They are naturally sensitive to the world around them, whether this be through emotions or even physical stimulus. They find themselves rather sensitive to things in ways that make them feel different from the majority of the people around them. Some HSPs will hide these traits, wanting to fit int and avoid standing out too much. Experiencing ridicule for being “too sensitive” is something which can only make those feelings harder to process. Being an HSP does not make someone an emotional mess, it does not make them weak, in a lot of ways it can be used as a strength or tool to connect with people and the world on a much deeper level. Being an HSP is not something which is naturally correlated with personality type, although some might be more commonly seen with these types of behaviors.

INFPs are naturally sensitive people, and so the INFP HSP definitely struggles with understanding themselves and those feelings they experience. Being someone who sees the world differently already makes it easy for the INFP to feel alienated from others. They might struggle to feel understood, constantly wanting to avoid being called “too sensitive” or “too emotional”. The INFP HSP is not overly sensitive, they simply process the world in a different way. This also makes them more in tune with people and experiences, and gives them a deeper understanding of what is going on beneath the surface. The INFP HSP is not easily understood by most people, which can make growing up rather challenging for them. 

Emotional Sensitivity

INFPs do naturally feel things deeply, but as an HSP they are even more connected to those inner emotions. Not only are they often connected to their own feelings, but they become more acutely aware of the people around them. This does filter through the INFP Fi, but being an HSP makes them naturally conscious of when someone around them is experiencing a more heightened emotion. They find themselves feeling overwhelmed by too much chaos and conflict, which is why they might want to avoid it entirely. When things become intense and heated, the INFP wants to find a way to calm the situation or escape it if they start to feel too overwhelmed. This is because it is difficult to process all of those emotions, while still processing their own. INFPs naturally need time alone to sift through everything they have experienced throughout the day, and the HSP INFP becomes even more desperate for this alone time. Without it they become emotionally and even physically exhausted, and don’t really know how to deal with all of those confused feelings bottling up inside of them.

The INFP who is also an HSP, finds themselves experiencing every emotion in a way that most people cannot comprehend. Whether this is a reflection of a past memory, or simply watching a TV show with too much violence. The highly sensitive INFP finds it difficult to just shut those feelings off, which is why they might try to avoid these situations entirely. Before they can be viewed as sensitive and feel insulted by this, they want to try and steer clear of situations which might expose them to that type of ridicule. The highly sensitive INFP is not weak because of their emotions, instead they are more conscientious and astoot.

Physical Sensitivity

One of the biggest things that HSPs deal with is feeling overwhelmed by too much outside stimuli. They find it more challenging to filter these feelings, and can easily become inundated when they are in situations where their surroundings are filled with too much noise, light or overpowering smells. When they are in an environment with too many different things coming at them at once, it leaves the highly sensitive INFP feeling an instant state of panic. They find that even the smallest touch or noise can push them over the edge when this happens, and it makes people misunderstand where they are coming from when they want to escape. This isn’t something they do intentionally, it is simply how their mind and body respond to highly-stimulating surroundings. 

How to Cope

One of the most important steps for the highly sensitive INFP, is to accept that there is nothing wrong with them. Being a highly sensitive person makes them more compassionate, and it makes them more capable of understanding the many layers of the world and people around them. This is something which can feel like a curse, but can also make the INFP a better and more understanding person. Being this highly sensitive person makes them considerate of others and more conscious of what they might be going through or dealing with. It makes them more capable of seeing the world from a different perspective, and even noticing the little things that others would not recognize because they are focused on something else. 

It might be difficult to process this part of themselves, but the best thing for the INFP is to accept it. Doing research is always helpful for INFPs, as well as finding other people who experience the same things as they do. Finding other HSPs, or more specifically highly sensitive INFPs, can help the INFP recognize that they are not alone and that there is nothing wrong with them. While they might be misunderstood at times, a major reason for this is because they are so rare. Being INFPs makes them rare to begin with, but adding HSP to that can make it even harder for them to feel understood. That doesn’t make it impossible for the INFP to find people who can appreciate their sensitivity, it just makes it feel that way. The more they become confident in themselves and who they are, the easier it becomes to connect with people who will cherish their sensitive soul in the way that they need. Not everyone is harsh and uncaring, the INFP just needs to be open to finding the right people who will be patient and willing to take the time needed to truly understand them.
