Here’s What Kind of Conversationalist You Are, Based on Your Personality Type

Some people have a knack for making conversation, while others have a different communication style. Here is what kind of a conversations you are, and just how good you are at it, based on your personality type.

INFJ

INFJs are often very good at making conversation, as long as it isn’t with someone they have a crush on. Sometimes they can become nervous speaking with someone who they have certain unexpressed feelings for, but in other cases they can handle themselves fairly well. INFJs prefer conversations that are deep and meaningful, and dislike having to entertain shallow chatter. INFJs want to discuss things that really allow them to connect with someone and understand who they are and what their dreams are made up of. They will however, be capable of engaging in small-talk, it will simply leave them feeling drained afterwards. INFJs have a way of engaging others in deeper conversations, even if this wasn’t their initial plan.

ENFJ

ENFJs re often great conversationalists, especially since they know how to adapt to the individual they are speaking with. ENFJs often know how to make small-talk, but usually struggle to do so. Their often find themselves trying to dig deeper, and people often respond fairly well to this. They are outgoing and social people who truly love being able to get to know others on a deeper and more personal level. ENFJs enjoy having long conversations about even the strangest of things, as long as they subjects inspire more complex thought and passions. They know how to really draw people in, and love being able just chat for hours.

INFP

INFPs might be introverts but they truly love experiencing deep and meaningful conversations. They might have a hard time initiating with some people, and can seem a bit strange to the ones who don’t understand them. This is mostly because INFPs really hate small-talk and often attempt to avoid it at all costs. Having to engage in shallow conversations can be extremely draining for them, and leave the INFPs feeling like they have wasted their energy completely. The INFPs conversation style is more in depth and passionate, they want to talk about meaningful things and share parts of their soul when they are truly engaging with someone.

ENFP

ENFPs are often great at initiating conversations, and are rarely afraid to communicate with others. They are outgoing and often social people, who like engaging with new people and learning about them. While ENFPs can often be charming and make with small talk for a short time, they prefer to conversations that are meaningful and thrilling. They want to find people who they can share deeper parts of themselves with, and they love hearing about interesting people and their complex thoughts and feelings.

INTJ

INTJs often despise small-talk and can be rather drained by it quickly. They don’t like having to engage in pointless chatter, especially if it seems to benefit them very little. INTJs prefer to focus on conversations that engage their minds and can actually inspire more complex thought. They are excited about conversations with people who challenge them to think about things they otherwise would not have. INTJs either make rather direct and to the point conversation, or they explore different theories and ideas with someone for long periods of time.

ENTJ

ENTJs are very comfortable initiating conversations and are good at maintaining them as well. They are social people who enjoy engaging in various topics, especially if they challenge their minds. ENTJs also enjoy being able to communicate with people who are truly interesting and have a lot of unique ideas which can help the ENTJ learn and grow. They aren’t fans of small-talk but they also realize that it is sometimes necessary, so they often find ways to keep up with it. ENTJs can be a bit direct with their conversation style, but they also have unique senses of humor which help spice things up.

INTP

INTPs can sometimes struggle to initiate conversations, and this can feel a bit awkward for them. In some instances they simply try to blend in and don’t like having to be forced into small-talk. INTPs as conversationalists can sometimes feel a bit overwhelmed, and dislike having to engage with people who just don’t interest them that much. They can sometimes just go along with the conversations, nodding and pretending like they are actually paying attention. When the INTP does engage in conversation and is truly excited about the discussion, they are passionate and rather intense. Their thoughts can veer off in so many directions that talking with them feels like entering into another world entirely.

ENTP

ENTPs are charming and social people who enjoy being able to hop into a conversation and fit right in. They are often great conversationalists, knowing how to adapt to whatever different topic is presented. ENTPs can be a bit all over the place in conversation sometimes, jumping from one topic to the next. This is usually when they are engaging with someone who challenges them and causes them to become truly excited about the topics they are discussing. ENTPs do also enjoy a back and forth banter with people, but they rarely find themselves participating in typical small talk.

ISTJ

ISTJs can be good conversationalists, but they do become rather drained quickly by others. ISTJs prefer to be by themselves most of the time, unless the conversation is truly stimulating. They enjoy getting into detail about certain topics with people who can actually hold their own. ISTJs are often focused on public issues and politics in many ways, since they believe in keeping up with these important topics. Being able to discuss these things and other new ideas with someone who shares an equally active mind, is often very rewarding for them.

ESTJ

ESTJs can have a very direct conversation style, and can become drained by people who blather on about pointless things. They are good at maintaining a conversation and keeping up with small-talk if it feels necessary, but will become bored of most people somewhat quickly. ESTJs want to discuss things that are valuable and can actually help them learn or improve in some ways. They are efficient people who work hard to get things done and become frustrate with inane chatter.

ISFJ

ISFJs are often great conversationalists, even though they can become drained by too much social interaction. They are often good at keeping up with the conversation and instinctively know the right words to say in order to appear polite and understanding. ISFJs are empathetic people, which is what helps them be great conversationalists. They can naturally feel what topics to avoid and also how to keep the conversation going in the right direction for everyone involved.

ESFJ

ESFJs are often excellent conversationalists, mostly because of their strong sense of empathy. They know how to keep harmony in the group and often know just what to say in order to please others. ESFJs can keep up with most conversations and often have a firm grasp on the right words to appear both polite and charming. They enjoy being able to connect with others and can often inspire people to open up about certain subjects they otherwise might have avoided.

ISTP

ISTPs might not enjoy making conversation with most people and can become quickly drained by it. They can often avoid getting into long conversations with people who don’t really hold their attention all that easy. When the ISTP does get into a discussion with someone who they connect with, they can enjoy both small-talk and detailed conversations with them. It is more about the person and the way they communicate, as well as their openness to the ISTP wanting to present them facts here and there.

ESTP

ESTPs often love making conversation and can switch it up in many different directions. While they enjoy discussing their thoughts and feelings, they also don’t mind discussions about their day. They like to engage with people and are often very comfortable initiating discussions. ESTPs are social creatures, who enjoy being able to get to know others and share different experiences back and forth with them.

ISFP

ISFPs can sometimes struggle to initiate conversations and might be a bit anxious around people they don’t know. They don’t often like engaging in small-talk with strangers and prefer to connect with people they truly enjoy and understand. When the ISFP does enjoy the presence of someone they can be great conversationalists, jumping into whatever topic is inspiring in that moment.

ESFP

ESFPs are amazing conversationalists since they truly enjoy sharing their thoughts and feelings with others. ESFPs are truly comfortable initiating new discussions and can often walk up to strangers with ease. ESFPs know how to communicate with people, especially when they are excited about something and want to share it. They are often very outgoing and social individuals, and this helps them find ways to navigate just about any conversation.
