Enneagram Type 4 Male: The Enneagram Type Four Man

The Enneagram is a categorization of personality types based on how people perceive and respond to the world and information they gather, as well their own emotions. This describes 9 different enneagram or personality types, and each one possesses certain core beliefs which are what drives them. These beliefs drive each type and also can be limiting at times, which is why understanding them is so important. It isn’t meant to lock people into those weaknesses or limitations, instead it is meant to help them improve and find ways to maintain a sense of healthy balance in their lives. It also helps to gain a deeper understanding of what motivates the people around you, and helps to comprehend why they contradict themselves at times. Knowing the enneagram gives a clearer sense of these inner motivations and even fears.

Understanding each type is important but it can also be important to understanding the variations. For certain types it might cause them to respond differently to the world being a type 4 Man, and how they are perceived by others because of this. They value being able to find their sense of identity, as well as a deep inner purpose. Understanding how this correlates with being a male type 4, can help to gain a deeper comprehension of how they respond to the world as well as how they can better manage their own emotions.

Type 4- The Individualist

The type 4 personality tends to see themselves as different from others, wanting to develop a strong sense of identity. The idea of being normal or just like everyone else, is often seen as a bad thing to them. They want to stand apart, and can become self-conscious about this desire. They can be fearful of vulnerability, since they don’t want to be judged or seen as ordinary by others. Fours care about self-expression and being able to find beautiful ways to show the world who they are and what makes them unique. They can often struggle with the idea that no one can ever truly understand them, always feeling far too different or strange to be loved the way they want to be. This causes them to distance themselves from people at times, especially when they are feeling a constant disconnect from the world around them. While there are certain aspects which can cause them to be unhealthy, the healthy four is actually great at personal self-awareness. They can see their strengths and flaws, but this helps them to work on those problem areas and not feel so alienated because of it.

The Type 4 Male Values

The type 4 male values individuality and being connected to their inner emotions and beliefs. Above everything they want to be true to their heart and what they believe is right. They need to be free and open to express those inner feelings without constantly being judged or held back. They way they express their emotions is a big part of how they connect with the world and how they respond to what they experience. This inner emotional connection is often what causes them to be artistic people, needing to find these outlets in order to really share themselves with others. This is also a big way in which they work through those inner feelings and complex emotions which make them who they are. Being someone who is original and unique is truly important for the type 4 male, which can be a struggle at times. They don’t want to blend in and instead want to be someone who stands out as different and uniquely who they are. Being truly authentic is one of the core values for the type 4 male and is not something they are willing to compromise on. Without this sense of self-awareness and emotional understanding, the type 4 male would not feel like themselves and instead would be under extreme stress. Being insincere and not being free to express who they are and what they feel, is definitely one of the worst things for the type 4 personality.

The Type 4 Male Struggles

For the type 4 male there are certainly plenty of unique struggles, ones which the 4 female might not experience quite so intensely. They can feel like they are not understood, and like others judge them as emotional and strange because of this. They are someone who needs to feel like their emotions are being recognized and what they are feeling is completely valid. Being someone who is emotionally expressive can certainly be judged and labelled poorly for a man. As unfair as this societal pressure is, that doesn’t make it simply disappear for the four male. They often experience feeling strange or out of the norm, especially around some of their male friends who don’t fully appreciate their need for emotional expression. They need to feel understood and need to be able to be themselves, even if they are someone who stands out from others. They care about always being true to themselves, and this means standing up for what they believe and expressing themselves openly.

The type 4 man can be withdrawn at times, going from being social and compassionate to needing a lot of time to themselves. They can go into a more melancholic state, which isn’t always something other people can fully understand. This is when they just need time to reflect, or sometimes if they are feeling a bit disillusioned with the outside world. When this happens they become distant from others and of course this can be misjudged rather easily. People might view them as depressive, and can avoid being around them because of this. They simply need time alone to process what they are feeling, and need people who are supportive and open with them. For the type 4 male being emotionally expressive and connected to feelings is something which can certainly be a struggle throughout their lives, but it is also something which makes them unique and genuine.
